Out at the farm there were two birds sitting up in a tree. They were faced to where they were looking down at the chickenhouse. One of the birds was a buzzard and the other was a chicken hawk. The chicken hawk started to move closer to the chickenhouse. "I can't stand it," he said to the buzzard, "I've got to get at one of those chickens." The buzzard looked at him with a wailful eye. "The Lord'll provide," said the buzzard, "and that's all that there is, is the Lord'll provide." So the chicken hawk moved back and say in silence. After a few more minutes, he started to inch closer. "Buzzard I've got to eat something!" He raised his wings, but the buzzard glared at him and said, "The Lord'll provide. And that's all there is, is the Lord'll provide." So, again, the chicken hawk sat down and kept his peace. About an hour later, the chickens were all outside and one of them scurried near the tree. The chicken hawk said he couldn't stand it and got up. He flew down at the chicken, ready to swoop down and snatch it. About that time the farmer came out with a shotgun and shot the chicken hawk. The bird fell down dead next to the tree. The buzzard, having seen all this, flew down and landed next to the carcass of the chicken hawk. He looked at him with a wailful eye, took a few seconds for him to give a reply, and said, "I knew the Lord would provide, I knew the Lord would provide. And that's all that there is, is the Lord'll provide."
