Due to the Nazi's bombing the factory he used to work in. His job was to move straw back and forth, he would take new straw bales shipped in every morning, put the hay in wheelbarrows where prisoners would then bring the wheelbarrows to where it was needed.
Every night, he had to bring the old and soiled hay used by the prisoners to a dump outside of the camp. Every day, he was searched on his way into the camp, and then again when he left to be sure he wasn't helping the prisoners or stealing. As the workers came and left, the Overseer, a very suspicious man, would watch the man enter before dawn, and leave after nightfall with the soiled hay, well after most other workers went home.
For some reason, he started to have the sneaking suspicion that this man was stealing from his camp! As weeks went by, the Overseer became more and more suspicious. Finally he couldn't take it anymore, and ordered two guards to search the man more thoroughly as he left one night, instead of the usual one. Nothing was found.
The next night, the overseer had three guards search the man, AND dump out the straw from the wheelbarrow to go through it. Again, nothing, and the old man quietly put the soiled hay back into the wheelbarrow, and left.
As the weeks went by and the man was searched more and more rigorously, the overseer finally started personally searching the man as he came in in the morning, and left at night with a wheelbarrow of soiled hay. Eventually, he even went so far as to have the man strip down each night, and had his guards dismantle the wheelbarrow, and search the straw with a magnifying glass! Still, nothing!
The overseer said to the man one night, "I know you are stealing from my camp, and as God as my witness, I WILL find what you are stealing, and throw your sorry ass in with the prisoners!". The man respectfully stated he was innocent, and allowed the guards to search him.
This went on for months. Eventually, the Allies overran the Nazis, and liberated the camp where the man worked. The overseer was thrown into prison by the allies to await trial for his crimes.
One day, he was visited by the old man. The overseer ranted and raved at the old man, demanding he told him what he had been stealing, as none of his men could ever find that the old man had been doing anything against the Reich. After the overseer finally ran out of breath, he asked the man one last time to tell him what he was stealing.
The old man grinned, and leaned close to the overseer. He softly said, "I was stealing wheelbarrows!"
