Marianne "Ma" King, the great barrelhouse piano player, played to packed houses in small deep-south clubs. The years passed, and Ma raised six kids, tended the garden and chickens, but always had time to rock the house on Saturday nights.
Everybody asked, "Ma, how come you ain't famous yet?" But Ma just loved the music and didn't think much about getting on the radio and making records.
When she was 68, a man wearing a fancy suit said he could get her a recording contract. But Ma didn't believe him.
"Yeah, sure," she said. "I'll sign that contract when you name a bird after me, young feller."
To her surprise, the young man said, "Sure thing, Ma'm. I knew what you were gonna say. That bird's already named after you. It can listen to your music and then repeat every note you play."
"What kind of bird is that?" she asked in disbelief.
He replied with a grin, "It's a Ma King Bird!"
