A man is killed. It's all over the news, making headlines everywhere. One of the country's top detectives is set to this case, and her name is Josephine Wright. She bids her husband goodbye, and sets off to investigate.
Now,when she arrived on the scene, the dead man was still in his bed, where he had been killed. He was with his wife at the time, about to make love. She had been refusing his advances, pushing him away, when suddenly-
"H-h-he j-just went all rigid and died r-right there,as if he had been stabbed!" Sobbed the apparently heartbroken wife.
The detective thought this was quite odd,and so decided to investigate more. Upon further examination of the body,it appeared that he HAD died from a stab wound-to the back of the head. There was a knife on the bedside table so naturally, the dead man's wife was called in for questioning once again.
"You killed him, didn't you?" Asked Josephine. "You stabbed him with the knife that was on the bedside table, all because you didn't want to sleep with your husband. Am I right?"
"N-no! I w-wouldn't kill him. I C-couldn't k-kill anyone!" The wife exclamed, shocked that this could even be considered a possibility.
After another half-hour of interrogation,Josephine became quite convinced that the wife wasn't to blame. So,she moved the man's body from the bed and lay down. After shifting around a bit,she became aware of a sharp ppoking sensation in the back of her head.Quickly, she grabbed the knife from the table and slit open the mattress.
Inside, she immediatley found a broken bedspring;it must have gone through the man's head! She related the news to to the wife, who immediately sent for a replacement mattress.
After the case,Josephine and the wife remained good friends, but there was one thing Josephine never understood:why a Bowie knife was on the bedside table. She asked the wife, and she immediately became very grave. "I do not speak of that." she said.
But after months of persistence, she finally told Josephine. "Just do me one favor, and don't tell anyone." The wife said.
And as long as she lived,Josephine never told anyone.
