*My friend told me this today, so I rewrote it the way I remember. Trust me, it's worth the read!*
This story takes place in the middle ages, with kings, knights, castles, etc.
There was an adventurer wandering through the night during a storm. The wind was gusting, and he was being pelted with bullets of rain. He
saw a castle nearby, and knocked on the giant wooden door. He was let in, and met with the king of the castle. He intrigued the king with
stories of his adventures, and the king made the adventurer feel at home. "You must be hungry during your journey. I can offer you anything
you want from our kitchen. If you can think of anything you would like to eat, my men will make it," the king told him. "There is one thing,"
replied the adventurer, "I want a pickled onion." The king obliged, and the adventurer was given his pickled onion. The king had also offered
a warm bed for the night, which the adventurer graciously accepted.
That night, while laying in bed, the king thought to himself, "That man could have had anything he wanted to eat, yet he chose to have a
pickled onion. How strange. Perhaps I will ask him in the morning why he chose it." And he drifted off to sleep. The next morning, when the
king went to ask the adventurer about his choice in food, he had already left.
A year later, on another stormy night, with winds that bent the thickest of trees, and blinding rain, the adventurer wandered. He could not go
on, and happened to stumble upon the same castle from a year before. He was let in, and greeted by the king once again. "You must tell me of
your adventures from the past year! But first, is there anything you would like to eat from my kitchen? My men can make you anything you want.
Truly, anything," The king insisted. "There is one thing that I would like," replied the adventurer, "I want a pickled onion." Once again, the
adventurer got what he asked for, and was also given a warm bed for the night.
Once again, the king thought to himself, "I offered that man anything, yet once again, he wanted a pickled onion. I will have to ask him first
thing in the morning why he would want that over anything else." After his slumber, the king rose and immediately went to ask the adventurer
this burning question. Once again, the adventurer had already gone, and the king was left puzzled.
Another year passed, and the adventurer found himself in yet another awful storm with bellowing winds and pouring rain. He happened to find himself at the same castle he had taken refuge at 2 times before. He was let in once again, and the king excitedly welcomed him.
"It's good to see you again! We must catch up on what has happened since the last time you visited! But first, my men can make you absolutely
anything you would like from the kitchen." Unsurprisingly, the adventurer responded, "There is one thing that I would like. I want a pickled
onion." The king was ready for that answer, and had one ready for his yearly visitor. "Before I give you this, I must ask one thing. Every time
you come here, I offer you anything you want from my kitchen. Why do you always choose a pickled onion?" The adventurer replied, "I will tell
you, but you must keep it a secret." And the king did.
