Twenty years ago, I was apprenticed to a tree surgeon. He taught me everything he knew about the trade. Climbing trees, using saws and axes, the best way to bring trees down safely - the lot.
Fifteen years ago, I completed my apprenticeship, and started working as a tree surgeon myself. It was hard work, long hours, but I did a good job and got paid well.
Ten years ago, I was doing well enough that I hired another tree surgeon to work with me. With two of us, I made even more money, and the business kept growing.
Five years ago, I was running the biggest tree surgery operation in the county, made more money than I'd ever imagined, lived in a big house, took two holidays a year. Life was good, but I spent most of my time in the office and hardly any time on the tools.
