Murphy...

...had had a very rough life. He was orphaned at the age of four, and was physically abused at every foster home he lived in. When he made it to high school, he was determined to study hard and make something of himself. But he was a sickly boy, and missed so much school that he didn't graduate.

He worked several low-paying jobs and got fired from every one. Every friend he made ended up stabbing him in the back. Every time he moved one step forward, he fell two steps back.

Finally, life took a turn for the better. Murphy met a woman, fell in love, and after a whirlwind courtship, they were married. This would be a new beginning for him, he felt. Now he would leave his hard-knock life behind.

Then, while driving to their honeymoon cottage, Murphy's tire blew out. His car careened off the road, rolled several times, and came to a rest. Murphy was thrown clear, but his bride was dead.

Murphy laid there, looking up at the sky. All the frustrations of his ruined life came pouring out.

"Why, God, why?" he cried to the heavens. "I've tried to live a good life! I've tried to be a decent person! Why have you thwarted me at every turn?"

There was a rumble of thunder and the clouds parted. A shaft of bright sunlight was cast upon the land, and a majestic voice boomed from on high:

"I dunno, Murphy. There's just something about you that pisses me off."
