A squad of American soldiers is stationed in Iraq.

When an explosive device is found by the road, their job is to guard it and make sure it doesn't go off until an expert can arrive and disarm it properly. Their job is a boring one, so a young private named Benjamin gets a clever idea. He catches a poisonous snake, names him Nate, and trains Nate to be a "guard snake." When they are called in to guard a bomb, Nate is released near the weapon and his presence is enough to drive off any passers by while the squad relaxes in the shade.

One day, Pvt. Benjamin and his squad are called in to guard a particularly odd type of bomb. Instead of a complicated detonator, it has a large lever which can be pushed to detonate the bomb. Nevertheless, they deploy Nate next to the bomb as usual and relax a few yards away.

Some time later, a car comes down the road at incredible speed. It is swerving and out of control, barely staying on the road. Suddenly, Pvt. Benjamin jumps to attention as he sees the inevitable about to happen. If the car hits the lever, it will push the lever and detonate the bomb, killing them all. Before he can do anything, the car is upon them. It swerves off the road toward the bomb, but just misses it by inches. Unfortunately, Nate is not so lucky, and the car runs him over. Sad as Pvt. Benjamin is about Nate's death, he has to admit one thing. Better Nate than lever.
