Lots of German soldiers are named Hans, a common name. So he gets in position and calls out "Hey, Hans!" A head pops up. "Ja?"
Bang! The Frenchman shoots him dead. It works! The next few days, he goes up and down his trench, racking up his kill count.
After a few days, a German officer notices a high head count, much more than usual. He calls over one of his smarter soldiers, and says "a bunch of people are being killed, and, funny thing, they're all named Hans. Find out what's going on!" The solider goes into hiding, and 50 meters down the trench, he hears the "Hey, Hans!" "Ja?" and bang! one of his buddies is killed.
He runs back to his lieutenant. "Here's what the French are doing!" The lieutenant says "Those French are pretty smart, but we're just as smart as they are. You go do the same thing, call out Jean, there's a bunch of Frenchman named Jean." "Ja mein Leutnant!"
The solider hides in his trench and yells out "Eh, Jean!" A Frenchman's voice answers "Is that you Hans?" "Ja!" says the German, popping up to see who it is.
