I thought the half-dollar wasn't being minted any more, but yes they are. Since 2002, they have only been minted for collectors and for "proof" sets. The US Mint has a huge inventory of pre-2002 halves because merchants don't stock them in their cash registers.
So I was pleasantly surprised yesterday to find a 50¢ piece.
