When he's sober, he beats his wife. When he's drunk, he beats his wife. When it's full moon, he beats his wife. Sometimes he beats her for no reason at all.
One day on his way home from the bar, he keels over on the doorstep, dead. They set up his casket in the front room and the townsfolk come to pay their respects and to comfort his grieving widow.
Six strapping men pick up his casket and carry it through the yard on the way to the local cemetary. When they reach the gate, one of them stumbles and bangs the corner of the casket against the post. McTavish sits bolt upright and starts cursing all of them for being so careless.
McTavish lives for another ten years. Being a cruel man, he beats his wife even more frequently than ever. Then one day, on his way home from the bar, he keels over on the doorstep, dead. They set up his casket in the front room - again - and the townsfolk come to pay their respects and to comfort his grieving widow - again.
Six strapping men pick up his casket and carry it through the yard on the way to the local cemetary. When they reach the gate, McTavish's grieving widow chokes back a sob and cries through her black veil, "Mind the gate."
