In London a rather well built society hostess was hosting a posh dinner for a number businessmen. One of the businessmen took an American colleague along. All through the dinner the hostess would noisily pass wind and, each time she did, one of the gentlemen would stand up, say 'excuse me Ma'am' and leave the room. Eventually the American said to his colleague 'What goes on? She keeps farting and the guys leave the room'. His friend said 'this is British politeness. The men are taking the blame for the lady'. The next time the hostess passed wind the American stood up and said 'Have this one on me, Ma'am' then left the room.
