He was at the village pub one day when there was a fire in the kitchen.
It was billowing great huge plumes of black smoke. Thick and nasty and horrible, and all of the other people in the pub were spluttering and coughing, and they couldn't get out. The situation was *terrible*.

Doug went in to the kitchen, inhaled, sharply, and deeply and all of the smoke went away. Everyone was able to get out safely.
